CATCHING A BREATH at Festival Time

So fire season is blowing up early, and we're late with the last promotions for the annual celebration of the Community's railroading past. We've been meeting for months, and I'm very thankful for newcomers. This "new blood" is talented, civic minded and very welcome.

During the spring heat wave, I spent long days tending to my Clients, and longer evenings watering my lawn for its soothing greenbelt buffer, and creating needed Alberton Railroad Day Montana literature:

Much of the above material is found on the Town of Alberton's website, where I donate the time it takes to update the Railroad Day page.  I do this because I believe in VOLUNTEERING, and giving back to our communities, because through such actions we ALL become stronger.  Sure, there are just a few of us (literally) pulling the organizational weight, but the surrounding community comes together as VENDORS and AUDIENCE who buy our fundraising Raffle tickets and collector souvenir Buttons. And they laugh and applaud at the Parade and the Wild West Show and the wonderful art and music that our community creates.

I remember one night recently, sweat dripping down my temples, lower back aching and ass and thighs feeling flat from sitting too long in this chair pushing to finish some project or another, and I wondered Why I do this ? How did I get so involved that I've been running a sleep deficit for weeks ?

And I think: There's always a personal payoff when we do something, if it's only the satisfaction of contributing to the welfare of others.  I recognize that. The volunteer hours I  give to the local Chamber, the posters and literature I create for a local play, or this town celebration, are now part of the record.  In the case of Railroad Day, I hope it lives on past me.

When I went to my first Railroad Day planning meeting ...how many years ago now? ... I was looking to expand my life further than my business workload or the dark walls of grief from losing my mate had allowed. As a Moon Child, identified as the Astrological Crab, I knew that I had the beginnings of a new carapace.  So I looked for a way to be helpful, and voila.  -It is LIFE.
